The internet has made it easier than ever to be offensive, vulgar, and disrespectful. It’s still true, though, that it’s best to make a point to never, ever violate any rules in order to remain a respectful and civil person. We can’t change the world without changing our behavior.
The best way to get around the rules is to follow them yourself. I’m here to tell you that a lot of things you can do to help yourself stay on the right side of the law are things that just aren’t on your list of priorities when it comes to internet etiquette. That being said, your internet persona should always have a purpose. Otherwise, it can feel like an online identity that’s missing something important.
First of all, we’ll start out with the legal stuff. As the title says, there are rules to follow when it comes to internet comment etiquette. As a member of the internet, your internet persona should have a purpose. You should be writing or talking about things that you care about, and should have a plan for writing or talking about it every day.
The first thing you should do is have your own profile page. When you are first starting out, be sure to go ahead and create an account on your own website. This will give you a place to write and share what you’ve accomplished.
I just want to say that the internet is an amazing resource and there are many people who have great stuff to share. I was once a member of a long-running discussion thread on Google+ about a certain topic that I was passionate about (in no particular order). One of the things that we talked about was whether or not you should be posting anonymously if you want to engage in a discussion. The bottom line is that you should always talk about things that are important to you.
The etiquette for anonymous commenting is to always have your comments appear on your profile page so that they are visible to all of your fans. Otherwise, you are not respecting the community’s privacy.
I find this topic a little tricky to nail down because of the fact that you have to be careful with what you say on your profile page. Many of us assume we have to disclose our identity on our profile page just because it is a public place. But if you don’t want to be obvious in your comments, you should still make them visible to all of your fans.
As to whether you are intentionally misleading your fans, or if you just don’t read the comments well enough, I’d say that you should not be using the comment section as a place for your thoughts or ideas to be posted. Instead, try posting them to your fan page, or to your profile if you are not already one of the fans. This will allow your fans to see and read your comments, and will also allow you to be more visible to the rest of the community.
It is also important for you to be upfront about what you are going to post, and what you are not going to post. As much as I like the idea that everyone should know what I am going to post, I also find that the majority of the trolls that make up the comments section are the same thing that make up the rest of the internet. The trolls will go after anyone who they feel has something worth attacking.
The truth is that if someone makes a comment that they do not necessarily agree with, it is important to make sure you have the right to post it. The trolls (and anyone else who might be offended) will go after anyone who they feel has something worth attacking. The trolls will also go after anyone who has something worth attacking. This means making sure that you are upfront about what you are going to post, and that you are also upfront about what you are not going to post.
